Progressive disclosure: Say the words out loud and do take your time doing so. It’s a tongue-twister, indeed! However, the idea of progressive disclosure is simple. It could more or less be explained by the philosophy of step by step. The term is frequently used in the architecture of websites in order not to overwhelm the user with options. In wayfinding we use the technique of progressive disclosure when the way to the goal is too complicated for the user to digest in one chunk. At hospitals, airports and stations people often have a stressful mind and we guide them, one step at a time, carefully with colour, recognisable graphic design and pertinent information – gradually and just enough for them to know their bearing and their next steps towards the final goal.
